Revis update

To update a previous item, star cornerback Darrelle Revis is reportedly furious at the contract offer the Jets presented to him last week. It seems clear that Revis’ intention is to obtain a contract that will make him the highest paid cornerback, and possibly defensive player, in the NFL. It’s equally clear that the Jets last offer was nowhere close to what Revis demanded.

What remains to be seen, however, is whether or not this is simply part of the negotiating process, where both sides offer proposals that they don’t expect to be accepted, or if this is the sign that there is a serious problem between Revis and the front office. Like all Jets fans, I really hope that this is not the sign that there will be problems between the team and its best player for the foreseeable future.

Instead, I am hopeful that this is just a small bump in the road, and that all of these problems will be resolved within a week or two.

Backup QB: Brunell or Sanchez?

This offseason, the Jets have made a number of moves that have made big splashes on the national radar. Santonio Holmes, LaDainian Tomlinson, Jason Taylor and Antonio Cromartie will all be wearing the green and white of the Jets this season, and all of these players are expected to make large contributions towards the Jets 2010 campaign. One position that has received almost no coverage, yet is as important as any listed above, is the position of backup quarterback. Last season, Mark Sanchez was backed up by Kellen Clemens. While Sanchez ranged from average to bad during the regular season (the playoffs were a different story) he was still significantly better than Clemens in the 1 1/2 games that Clemens played in due to Sanchez’s bruised knee.

With Sanchez rehabbing from knee surgery, he must be considered at least a moderate injury risk, and the position of backup quarterback will take on an added importance should he get hurt again. Multiple reports have claimed that the Jets are very interested in signing Mark Brunell to back up Sanchez, and it is easy to see why he would appeal to the Jets’ front office. Brunell was a winner during his time in Jacksonville, and now that he is 40 years old, he should be able to provide help and advice to Sanchez. At the same time, however, there is a very real chance that the Jets’ backup quarterback will have to appear in at least one game this season. If that should happen, do we as Jets fans feel comfortable that Brunell would be able to competently manage the Jets offense? For all of his flaws, Kellen Clemens appeared able to move well enough, and he didn’t throw any interceptions in his performance against the Bucs. While neither Clemens or Brunell is a very appealing option, it is likely that one of these two players will be under center in the event that anything happens to Sanchez, and only time will tell who we can expect to see as a Jet next season

No defense for playing blame game

Jets Nation would had to have been blind not to see Kerry Rhodes running a yard behind Marcedes Lewis on the 33-yard completion that essentially sealed a fate the Jets had been tempting since the opening kickoff.

But there was no justice in that. Rhodes, it turned out, was an innocent man.

“There should have been somebody over the top,” said the free safety, throwing that somebody under the bus, from where strong safety Jim Leonhard emerged with tire marks and an apology.

“Knowing we had a timeout, in hindsight we probably should have burned it. It was too late to try to get it changed. You saw what happened.”

After David Garrard, who got the ball back with 4:56 to play trailing by one, had twice moved the sticks on third-down conversions to Zach Miller and Mike Thomas (the second on a third-and-9), the Jacksonville quarterback nailed the slant to Lewis that put the ball on the Jets’ 14, setting up Josh Scobee’s chip shot field goal as the game expired.

Jets suffer awful loss to lowly Bills, 16-13 in OT

They were eager to prove that what occurred six days earlier was an aberration, that it was just a slight hiccup.

The Jets weren’t feeling like big shots coming off that Monday Night Meltdown, but they were confident that they were going to get things turned around Sunday against the Bills, a team that was reeling and had dropped its previous eight contests against AFC East opponents. This was supposed to be their get-well game, with the Bills providing the perfect fodder to pound into submission and cure their ills.

Never happened, though, and now the Jets are the team that’s reeling after a 16-13 overtime loss. The Jets have dropped three straight since their season-opening three-game winning streak.

In a game in which the Jets had several chances to put Buffalo away, they made too many miscues and not enough plays, failing to step on the Bills’ throats despite the countless opportunities.

Ryan Lindell banged a 47-yard field goal through with 2:44 left in overtime – making amends for a 46-yard miss at the end of regulation – to put the finishing touches on a stinging loss that left the Jets searching for answers.

“It’s unfortunate,” linebacker Bart Scott said. “We knew that team was going to come out and play hard. We knew they were a competitive group. We let one get away, but we have to go back and reanalyze ourselves. We’ll find out a lot about ourselves. There will be a lot of things said, and deservedly so. We deserve every negative thing that’s being said about us.”

There’s going to be a lot of negative things said about the Jets’ golden rookie quarterback, who had a stinker of a game. Mark Sanchez was a turnover machine, whipping ill-advised passes around and never getting into any sustained rhythm. He threw five interceptions and finished with a quarterback rating of 8.3, completing 10 of 29 attempts for 119 yards.

Jets ‘D’-ny post-Miami panic

Several key Jets veterans said yesterday that, despite a defensive meltdown in Monday night’s loss to the Dolphins, panic has not set in.

“It’s not in-case-of-emergency-break-glass time, but it’s definitely time to get a win,” linebacker Bart Scott said. “Hopefully we’ll be 4-2 [after beating Buffalo], which ain’t the worst thing in the world.”

Nose tackle Kris Jenkins said, “I don’t think there’s a depressed state here. I don’t think people are unraveling where they’re giving up hope and throwing in the towel.”

Scott agreed with coach Rex Ryan, who called Sunday a “must win,” that there is an urgency to this week.

“Damn straight,” Scott said. “We just had an opportunity to show the world what we were — the one time we had this year to show the world what type of team we are — and now they believe we’re something else.

“I wish we could play today. I can’t wait to hit somebody. I can’t wait to step out there and see somebody in another jersey, so I can take all this pain and all this embarrassment that I’m feeling and inflict it on somebody else.”
